Blood has once again been spilled in the Far North region of Cameroon, precisely in Sagmé, a locality in Fotokol, in the Logone and Chari Division and a few dozen kilometres from the border with Nigeria following a serious confrontation between Government forces and elements of the Boko Haram Islamist sect.
According to a press release issued by the Defense Ministry Spokesperson, Navy Captain Cyrille Atonfack, the terrorists in their numbers and heavily armed stormed the locality of Sagmé onboard light tactical vehicles and attacked the outpost of the military operation EMERGECE 4.
The soldiers on duty counterattacked and the infighting claimed the lives of eight of them included the Commander of the military base and several Boko Haram elements as well. Thanks to the swift reaction from the defense forces on duty, they were able to repel the terrorists and save more lives.
Besides the eight soldiers who lost their lives, 13 others sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Maroua Military Hospital. Following this new attack, the Minister of Defense, Joseph Beti Assomo instructed that security be reinforced in the Far North region and at borders.
He has equally extended the heartfelt condolences of the Head of State to the families of the departed soldiers as well wished a quick recovery to those that sustained injuries. It is worth mentioning that recently, Boko Haram has been multiplying attacks against defense forces as well as the population in some localities in the Far North region of Cameroon. Boko Haram has plagued Cameroon’s Far North region since 2014, killing more than 2,000 people, according to security reports.
In mid-June, the group confirmed that its leader, Abubakar Shekau was killed after clashes with ISWAP.
